Sarah Asante's art

The art by Sarah Asante is highly versatile, ranging from simple, minimalist designs emphasising complementary colours to more complex arrangements that juxtapose vibrant palettes with muted tones. Common materials include patterned and textured paper, tissue, and card, with meticulous hand-cut details. Her work often incorporates halos or radiating lines, evoking saintly or celestial imagery, while exploring emotional and cultural undertones.

Inspiration

My art is influenced by art particularly pop art, religion, culture and people. All of these subjects intertwine in my mind, and I interpret them onto paper. As an Artist of both African and Asian heritage, this feeds into my practice. In both cultures colour is used boldly and therefore my work at times it is vibrant and loud, and at other times it may be muted and complimentary.

Most of my vibrant work is created in daylight hours while my work for more muted pieces tend to take place in the evenings or night. I love to work while music plays, particularly pop music, which seems to assist with the flow of my work and the outcome.

Pieces to form my work are cut individually. Placement of pieces is of the utmost importance to balance the piece. I match colours slowly and thoughtfully. I want my viewers' eyes to be drawn to specific areas and for them to experience a different way of placing patterns and colours together.

In the future I would like to work on projects that more candidly reflect my heritage using various materials, colours and fabrics. I am very excited to explore different mediums in the future to create unique works.
